Guitar Care Basics is a workshop designed to give you the proper techniques for restringing your guitar, adjusting playability, and tips and tricks for better overall guitar performance.

Topics covered include restringing techniques, truss rod adjustment, intonation adjustment, tremolo adjustment, troubleshooting common problems, pick-up theory, and switching string gauge. We will also discuss the best way to keep your guitar in playing shape through the transitional seasons of year, as well as the main differences between caring for acoustics and electrics.

The workshop centers on a hand's-on, live demonstration of the above mentioned topics on a Mini-Squire Stratocaster. It is in average playing condition as is, but will transform to something worth learning on by the end of our time together.

If you have ever been dissatisfied with the performance of your guitar, whether it is brand new out-of-the-box, an old battleaxe, or a great used find, this is the workshop for you! Students are encouraged to bring any guitar that they think could play better for discussion purposes, and to come with questions.

This workshop is recommended for anyone that is curious about how to better care for their instrument, from young beginners to old pros. Students under 10 years of age should have a parent present.

Jake is bringing this intriguing workshop from Groton to Newton! In this month's "Music of the Spheres" workshop, Jake intends to enchant your mind with the simple yet complex similarities between geometry and music. The Universe speaks one language, and that is mathematics. What better way to enjoy the rules of mathematics than the real time experience of music?

Jake has searched high and low for every piece of information he can find from ancient and contemporary sources. This includes the fairly recent illumination of facts from Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic, and Rosicrucian philosophy. The results of his research have filled his thoughts with incredible veneration for the harmony in our Universe (One-Verse).

Jake's hope is to assist you in seeing the correlation between sound, color, mathematics, the human body, and the stars. Come join him as we discuss and discover these beautiful rules on our guitars!

About this workshop:
Have you ever opened a “fake book” and felt overwhelmed by jazz chord notation or had difficulty figuring out which form of the chord to play? Or do you just want to be more comfortable with the many voicings for 7th chords and other chords that build on them? If so, then this workshop will map out the territory and show you the way ahead.

This workshop will provide the aspiring guitarist with helpful tools to visualize the fretboard relationships that form 7th, 9th, 13th, and diminished chords. Fretboard diagrams for families of movable chords will be provided in handouts, along with exercises to enhance selection of voicings when playing. We’ll learn tunes full of 7th chords and practice soloing on top of them to get comfortable with that jazz chord sound. Knowledge of the circle of fifths and some knowledge of bar chords will be helpful. Please bring your own guitar.

Registration will be open until noon on Friday, 3/15/19. Please be sure to register and pay in advance in order to secure your spot. If you do not register in advance and show up day-of we cannot guarantee there will be room. If you arrive without registering in advance and we do not have room, we will extend to you a $10 credit towards a future workshop.

We all have an innate sense of what rhythm feels like, but sometimes it seems like feeling a rhythm, and playing a rhythm can be two very different things. We know that rhythm is the thing that gives a piece of music its particular pulse, and that makes us want to get up out of our seats and dance, but what are the elements of rhythm and how can I apply them to make my music better and more satisfying? What is groove? What is shuffle or swing, and why do jazz and blues players always say I'm doing them wrong?

<Click here to reserve your seat.>

We may have heard of music theory, but most of the time they're just talking about notes, scales, and harmonies. This is all very good, but is there a theory for rhythm? We look at a piece of music and right up at the top we see 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, or 12/8; there are even some that say 5/4, 7/8, or 7/8+5/8! What does it all mean and how does all of this get applied to make music rhythmic?

If you've asked any of these questions then I'd like to invite you to join me for my workshop specifically designed to answer them. Whether you've just recently started strumming a guitar, banjo, or ukulele, or even if you've been plucking away for years, this workshop will make you think of rhythm in new ways. You'll learn all about rhythm and groove, and maybe pick up a few new strumming patterns. Maybe you'll even come up with a few patterns of your own!

Open to musicians of all instruments.

During the course of the interview Rob talks about the humble beginnings of our guitar school and what caused his life change that inspired him to teach guitar throughout New England.

Excerpt from the magazine article (click here to be taken to the actual interview on Boston Voyager):

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rob. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Rob’s Guitar School in 2013 after I was let go from a major financial firm in the Boston area after working nearly 20 years in the financial services industry for some of the really big companies. I chose not to go back into it because it was not my passion and instead I decided to pursue my dream of making a living by playing guitar. I’d been playing guitar semi-professionally for over 30 years at that time and had taught guitar at music stores and to friends and family members but had never really considered turning it into a career. I started the school originally in my home but then moved to a nearby yarn store in Groton, MA with a gracious owner who really believed in what I was doing. After several years of teaching there we moved to a new location in the center of Groton MA and in 2016 we opened a second location in Newton MA. There’ve been a number of ups and downs but we’ve never given up on our desire to be the best guitar school ever, and it’s really paid off. Our students love learning guitar just as much as our teachers and I love teaching it. It really is the best job that I ever could imagine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We definitely had our struggles. Trying to get the word out on a limited budget requires a lot of work and dedication. I can remember hand delivering about a thousand flyers to every mailbox in the Groton area during our first few months. From having booths at farmers markets and in regional county fairs and in local volunteer events, we’ve worked our butts off. I’ve been on radio stations and local public access channels promoting our guitar school. I’ve brought my guitar with me and played on the side of streets waving at people to stop and take flyers for a free guitar lesson. All at the same time while developing an excellent teaching program for our students to get the maximum benefit of. I’ve also benefited from the excellent advice from my wonderful fiancée and from close friends around me. I’ve always tried to listen and learn and be open-minded because the second you think you know it all is when you start going backwards. It’s been tough but very, very gratifying.

Please tell us about Rob’s Guitar School.
We’re a growing guitar school that evolves around our mission statement to be the best guitar school ever. To care about our students and their progress more than any other music school or music teacher around. Without that being in place, we would not be the growing thriving business that we are today. If you don’t put your students first, you won’t get very far at all. In our guitar schools, each of our students receive their own personal student handbook that is hand made for them. We offer multiple guitar programs for the acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar each at different levels; beginner, intermediate and advanced. We’ve even taught mandolin and ukulele lessons. The majority of our programs offer more than one class a week giving our students the opportunity to get more than one lesson a week. When you add to that a monthly private lesson detailed to each student’s specific goals on guitar, you get the very best guitar learning experience anywhere. And then when you add periodic opportunities for students to perform what they’ve learned if they wish that just pushes us over the top.

Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business?
As I was saying before, my fiancée Donna has been a great influence. She, herself, is a very successful investor who has given me enthusiastic support and great ideas drawing from her own experiences. She’s a great sounding board when I run into a challenge.

I’ve also talked to fellow business owners and try to draw from their experiences and at times have seen a business coach. I’m also a 3rd degree black belt in Uechi-Ryu style karate and my sensei, Neil Stone, who is himself a very successful business owner has been a terrific source of advice, especially when I first started.

My students, past and present, have been a huge help. Their support and word of mouth have been invaluable. Starting and growing a business is not something that you can do alone. It takes a lot of help and advice.

Finally, I’m constantly listening to, watching and reading motivational books, videos, cd’s and tapes. It’s so important to keep a positive viewpoint on everything that happens and realize that challenges are really opportunities to learn and grow. Also, learning about how to set and go about achieving goals has been critically important to me.

We are happy to announce that our guitar school has relocated to the Groton Grange in Groton MA. We will begin holding classes at the Grange on Tuesday, May 31st. The address for the Grange is 80 Champney Street, Groton, 01450.

For those of you interested in a little history, the Groton Grange #7 was founded in October 18th, 1873 as the seventh Grange in the state. It was the first major social intuition to admit women.

The Grange was founded in response to the industrialization of the region of Groton and Ayer. Meetings took up the issues of agricultural business, entertainment lectures and the award of scholarships to local students.

The Grange acquired the building it is currently in at 80 Champney Street in 1916. It was a former carriage and paint shop. The building was renovated and updated again in 2008 to meet the needs of the growing chapter and to further provide programing for the interest of the community. These updates included the upstairs stage with screening room for films, meeting area for functions, handicap accessibility and to provide an affordable venue for the public to rent the hall for events.

We would like to thank Brad and Sally Smith for giving us the terrific opportunity take our guitar music and talented students to the heart of downtown Groton!

We would also like to send out a big thank you to Janet Shea of the Clover Farm General Store in West Groton for allowing us to hold classes in her wonderful store for the past 3 years. And behind the counter, leaning over her knitting, is Shea, shopkeeper, knitting teacher, grandmother to neighborhood kids who know that if they're shy a nickel or a dollar, they'll be trusted to pay up the next time - and they do.

What's also apparent is the absence of 21st century noise: nobody talking on a phone; nobody hunkered down over a laptop; not one ping or ring tone or one-sided conversation, because even though Shea has Wi-Fi, she doesn't advertise it.

"It's the history. It hasn't changed that much," says Jean Cunningham, who attends the Monday knitting group. "It's clean and nice, and in general, the same old building that's been there for so many years."

For 75 years, the building at the crossroads of West Main Street and Townsend and Pepperell roads was the Sherwin Brothers Market. When the Sherwins retired about eight years ago, it became a coffee shop. When that closed in 2012, Shea stepped in and bought the building.

"I wanted it to stay a general store," Shea says.

Shea knew the building well, having worked for 21 years as relief postmaster at the tiny village post office across the street. She also ran a yarn shop in West Groton, so it made sense to teach knitting as well as sell candy in her new space.

But soon, Shea was carrying wine - and claiming the distinction of being "the only knitting store in the country with a beer and wine license."

She also began holding wine tastings, and when she learned a customer, Rob Compagna, was starting a trio and a guitar school, she proposed a barter: If Compagna and his group performed at the wine tastings, Shea would provide space for him to give guitar lessons.

Inventory at the store is modest, but variety prevails. Behind a glass case, near the K-cups and coffee maker, are sandwiches from the Country Butcher and Deli in Groton proper; banana and zucchini breads from a popular local bakery; hard-boiled local eggs; and locally grown peaches.

There's a photo on the piano of the owner's son, Daniel, who died in a car accident 13 years ago; a hand-printed "welcome" written on a chalkboard over the counter; and dozens of knitted scarfs and sweaters along the back wall, all of them labeled with Shea's signature, "Made with love by the Yrn Pedlar."

Up front, when the guitar school isn't in session, customers can choose from a quartet of old, mismatched rocking chairs.

On a late-summer afternoon, four women in her knitting group settle in at the big table in the back of the store.

Conversation begins on a light note. Lobsters on sale at the supermarket. Friends who have lost weight - or gained it. What someone ordered at a nearby steakhouse on Saturday night. Weddings. Babies. Grandchildren. Deaths.

A neighbor stops by to say hello and unburden herself of a recent trauma: On a Friday night, her house in the village was broken into.

"The horrible thing is the aftermath," she says. Faces tighten.

An elderly man walks in, circles the front of the store, and exits like an extra in a play.

"Oh, it's your boyfriend," Pat Nelles, a member of the knitting group, says to Shea.

"We've got some characters in this town," Shea replies, straight as an arrow, not a glimpse of a smile.

Next through the door is a runner dripping with sweat who wants to use her debit card to buy a bottle of water. "Take the water and come back with the dollar," Shea tells her.

Clover Farm General Store is open every day but Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and except for the occasional friend who spells her for an hour here and there, Shea runs the operation alone.

Knitters are welcome between classes, and everyone is invited to knit for charity; Shea delivers anonymously or packs and sends all sorts of items: hundreds of helmet covers sent to service people on active duty; more than 500 hats knitted and sent to Native American reservations in northern New England and lower Canada every year; hundreds of chemo caps and lap robes to hospitals; dozens of scarfs, hats, and mittens to Loaves and Fishes, the local food pantry; and baby booties, sweaters, and caps to agencies that help new mothers with limited means.

"My mother was always giving to people," says Shea, who grew up in Somerville, one of six children.
